California Legislation Pending - Act Now!

Making Digital Citizenship and Media Literacy a Reality in California
By: The Center for Media Literacy and Common Sense Kids Action

California is in a pivotal moment for teachers, parents and students to help set a global standard for teaching and learning.  Two key bills to promote digital citizenship and media literacy in California schools have passed in the state legislature and are headed to the Governor’s desk--and he needs to hear your voice!  Waiting for Governor Jerry Brown’s signature are two bills that have cleared legislative hurdles after a multi-year campaign conducted by California State Senators Bill Dodd (Napa) and Hannah-Beth Jackson (Santa Barbara).  Through SB 947 and SB 830, all California school children can begin to acquire the critical thinking skills needed to discern fact from fiction and news from entertainment, as well as the skills they need to be active, informed citizens living in a media-driven world.  Read more

Community Engagement/Service Learning

CML was pleased to work with Dr. Bobbie Eisenstock's undergraduate journalism/diversity students at California State University, Northridge in fall 2017.  At post-test, 78% of these students reported that they didn’t learn about media literacy until their college class. This number reveals how little opportunity students had to engage with media literacy concepts in their K-12 experience. The students created service learning projects as part of their classwork and we share a few of the projects along with assignments completed during the semester here

March Issue - Redefining School Communities

In this issue of Connections, we discuss schools as online and offline communities, and how media literacy skills can empower students to actively and responsibly address the difficult topics and risks of our day.
